Observer wins 10 Virginia Press Association awards

Buettner Buettner The Observer’s 10 editorial and advertising awards from the Virginia Press Association’s annual contest included three first place prizes; all the awards were delivered during a ceremony at a weekend conference in Norfolk.

The Observer’s winning entries were submitted for judging alongside advertising content from non-daily newspapers with circulations of at least 10,000 throughout the state.

The winners in editorial categories are:

Staff writer Jim McConnell – first place for education writing and second place for sports writing.

News Editor Mike Buettner – second place for business and financial writing and second place for health, science and environmental writing.

Contributing writer Donna Gregory – second place for education writing.

Contributing photographer Ash Daniel – first place for personality or portrait photo.

Gregory Gregory Creative Director Carly Crown won four awards for design: a first for real estate advertising design, a second for special advertising section design, a second for education and churches advertising design, and a third for professional and technology services advertising design.
