County cemetery hit again by bronze thieves

Michael Buettner

Bronze thieves are at it again.

According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, numerous bronze vases were stolen from Dale Memorial Park in the 10200 block of Newbys Bridge Road on April 9.

Last summer, more than 70 bronze vases were stolen from Bermuda Memorial Park in the 1900 block of Bermuda Hundred Road.

That was not the first time Bermuda Memorial Park was hit by this type of theft. In 2010, a Rhode Island man was convicted of stealing 120 vases from the Enon-area cemetery and more than 200 from a cemetery in Prince George County. In those cases, police said the vases were sold to a scrap yard in Petersburg. In the two cases, the thief received prison sentences totaling more than 30 years, though all but about five years was suspended.

In March 2011, someone stole about 190 vases from headstones at Sunset Memorial Park in the 2900 block of West Hundred Road in Chester. A spokesperson for the cemetery said at the time that the collective value of the missing vases was about $40,000.

Dale Memorial Park was also hit by thieves in November 2010, when 300 vases were stolen but later recovered.

Online sources indicate that scrap dealers currently are paying somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.80 to $2 a pound for bronze. Replacement bronze memorial vases, on the other hand, have prices ranging from about $150 to more than $800 depending on the style and size.
